The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to question certain calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
