Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
