Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
