Government Official Confirms MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been told to avoid discussing secret matters in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

He explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This broader security situation highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from transport usage to discussions habits.
