At least 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
